NKA SOWETO, in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg and the South African Institute of Environmental Health (SAIEH), hosted an air-pollution awareness campaign in Noordgesig on the 3rd of March, 2026. The initiative aimed to educate the community about the health impacts of air pollution and promote healthier living environments.
The organisation continues to drive community-focused environmental action in Noordgesig by educating residents and schools about the health risks linked to poor air quality, particularly respiratory illnesses like asthma and lung infections. The initiative empowered 31 participants, including high school learners and community members, to become advocates for cleaner air. Through collaboration with municipal stakeholders, the programme helped bridge information gaps and supports long‑term community health awareness.
The campaign used a participatory approach that combined presentations, interactive activities, and an engaging Q&A session with small incentives, helping simplify environmental health concepts and keep learners actively involved. The interactive sessions helped participants clearly understand how air pollution affects lung health and, overall, well‑being. The event also created meaningful dialogue between residents and officials from the City of Johannesburg and SAIEH, reinforcing the community’s ongoing need for education and joint efforts to improve local air quality.
