Our Partners

This initiative is built on strong collaboration between global, municipal, and community-focused partners who share a commitment to improving air quality and strengthening environmental justice in Johannesburg. Each partner contributes unique expertise—ranging from global clean-air leadership, to city-level governance, to community-driven implementation—ensuring a holistic and impactful approach to cleaner air for all residents.

Breathe Cities

Breathe Cities is a global initiative supporting cities to clean the air and enhance public health. Delivered by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Clean Air Fund and C40 Cities, the initiative offers cities tools to take ambitious clean air action by expanding access to data and raising public awareness. Launched in 2023 by Michael R. Bloomberg, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions and founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, and Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London and C40 Cities Co-Chair, Breathe Cities is accelerating action in 16 cities to improve the air more than 88 million people breathe. City of Johannesburg

The City of Johannesburg plays a central role in protecting environmental health and improving air quality across the metro. Through its Air Quality Management Unit and broader environmental programmes, the City provides technical oversight, regulatory alignment, and strategic direction for this initiative. Its partnership ensures that community-led campaigns, digital tools, and advocacy efforts are aligned with municipal priorities and that insights from this project contribute to a more responsive, accountable, and equitable clean-air agenda for all residents.

Seriti Institute

Seriti Institute is a South African non-profit organisation specialising in large-scale, community-led development programmes. With a strong track record in civic mobilisation, skills development, behavioural change campaigns, and dignity-based engagement, Seriti leads the implementation of this project on the ground. Seriti trains and supports community-based organisations, convenes networks across Johannesburg, and drives the development of the Breathe Joburg digital platform—ensuring that air-quality awareness, data access, and advocacy are rooted in the lived experiences of local communities.
