Project Summary

This project aims to generate data on the real-world emissions from vehicles in Greater Johannesburg and provide a detailed evaluation of the vehicle fleet and their emissions with an innovative remote sensing technology.
The generated data will help identify vehicle groups with the highest emissions and the findings will inform the development of a Clean Air Zone in the region to reduce traffic-related emissions and the associated health risks.
Particularly, the widened study area including the Gauteng area surrounding the city of Johannesburg will provide a better understanding of larger mobility patterns and support regional interventions. The project further aims to increase the accessibility to vehicle fleet and emission data by developing local expertise in vehicle emissions testing and future monitoring activities and making the generated data readily available in a format that can be utilized by city officials, citizens, and other stakeholders.
