Project Summary

This project seeks to assess the health impacts of ambient air pollution in Johannesburg through a multi-method approach that integrates environmental monitoring, health data analysis, and stakeholder engagement. The Health Systems Trust (HST) will implement an 18-month project combining:

  1. A human health risk assessment (HHRA)–equitable exposure based on pollutant concentrations and their association with morbidity and mortality indicators.
  2. A 12-month low-cost ambient air quality monitoring in targeted areas in Johannesburg.
  3. A household-level knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) survey to explore community understanding and or responses to air pollution.
  4. Focus group discussions with local policymakers, environmental health practitioners and air pollution policy officers to identify systemic barriers to effective air quality management.
  5. Drive awareness on impacts of air quality on health among environmental health professionals and communities.
