Air pollution affects everyone, but for vulnerable communities, its impact is even more severe. In Diepsloot, Bontle ke Thlago took a powerful step toward changing this reality by hosting an awareness campaign on the 20th of March, 2026, focused on understanding and addressing the unequal burden of poor air quality.

Through a participatory and community-centered workshop, the campaign created a safe space for residents to share their lived experiences and connect air pollution to their daily lives. Conversations revealed how common practices such as waste burning, vehicle emissions, and nearby industrial activities continue to harm the air they breathe. More importantly, participants reflected on how limited access to healthcare and resources makes these communities more vulnerable to respiratory illnesses and long-term health risks.

As the discussions unfolded, awareness turned into empowerment. The campaign not only highlighted the challenges but also introduced practical solutions, encouraging residents to reduce waste burning, improve waste management, and work together to protect their environment. By placing community voices at the center, the initiative strengthened a sense of shared responsibility and inspired collective action.

With 40 participants actively engaged, the workshop proved that when people are heard and informed, they are more willing to be part of the solution. This campaign stands as a powerful reminder that achieving clean air requires inclusive, community-driven efforts ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight for healthier environments.
